Is mobile internet adoption inevitable?

Research from MediaTel found that 40% of people claiming to own an internet-enabled handset say that they don’t access the internet on it.  They question the inevitability of mobile internet adoption and whether these stats are due to lack of perceived benefit or just waiting for the adoption curve to take over?  Thoughts from MediaTel over here….. I’m leaning towards inevitability….

Using social media in qualitative research via @conversition → mra-net.org

Stumbled across a paper outlining how IMRO have used social media and qualitative methodologies to listen in on the conversations happening around a brand’s sponsorship of a big TV show:

Their methodology involved:

  • Real-time monitoring before, during and after premiere via Twitter,
  • Scouring Facebook, blogs and existing online communities
  • Monitoring sentiment trends
  • Obtaining viewer reactions and insights to a variety of different “peaks” and “valleys” throughout the course of the research
  • Identifing key discussion leaders and influencers via reach, engagement and impact

Whilst this type of analysis might currently sit with social media experts or planning teams this is the type of digital insights that could easily be built into qual methodologies and debriefs.  

I think there is a difference to be drawn between monitoring and listening and I’ve been hearing some interesting conversations about the sweet spot between social media monitoring and qual research.  This blog post has some interesting thoughts about the difference between monitoring and listening which I think are relevant to this point.

The Englishman who posted himself and other curious objects

 

In 1898, Bray purchased a copy of the Post Office Guide, and began to study the regulations published quarterly by the British postal authorities.  He discovered that the smallest item one could post was a bee, and the largest, and elephant.    Intrigued, he decided to experiment with sending ordinary and strange objects through the post unwrapped, including a turnip, a bowler hat, a bicycle pump, shirt cuffs, seaweed, a clothes brush, even a rabbit’s skull.  He eventually posted his Irish terrier and himself (not together), earning him the name “The Human Letter”.
